A medical physician can tell us about our physical ailments. A psychologist or psychiatrist can tell us about our mental disorders and the symptoms. Only those that have successfully traveled the path of mental health recovery can tell others about how it feels to experience the journey.
The volunteer members of Stories of Recovery are individuals who have thrived in spite of their illnesses. You will hear the stories of how the feelings of despair and anguish have turned to feelings of hope, acceptance and recovery.
A volunteer was asked why they participate in the program and they answered;
“I can never hope to repay all of the people involved in the miracle of my recovery. All I can do is to pass along the care, compassion and gifts that I have received.”
Another stated,
“The general public still has a number of misconceptions about mental illness and needs to be educated that it is okay to have a mental disorder and people really do recover.”
