Story of the Bell
Cast from shackles which bound them, this bell shall ring out hope for the mentally ill and victory over mental illness.
These words form the inscription on a 300-pound bell that is the symbol of Mental Health America. Located at national headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia, this bell was cast in 1956 from iron chains and shackles that were used throughout the United States to restrain persons with mental illness.
